Loss of appetite and weight loss
The molecule’s appetite-stimulating effect helps patients suffering from Aids; it is possible that THC directly attacks the pathogen of the immune deficiency syndrome (Lutge et al., 2013).
Anorexia and cachexia in HIV/Aids
All previously published studies (n = 7) have demonstrated a positive effect of Dronabinol and smoked cannabis in treating loss of appetite among HIV patients.
In a six-week, double-blind placebo-controlled study involving 139 patients, Dronabinol faired significantly better than the placebo: While body weight remained constant under Dronabinol (2 × 2.5 mg), patients in the placebo group lost an average of 0.4 kg.
In a three-arm study, low-dosed Dronabinol (2 × 2.5 mg) was less effective than high-dosed Megestrolazetat (750 mg). Cannabinoids were also effective in the treatment of appetite loss and loss of weight for patients with tumour diseases and Alzheimer’s.
